I know, I know I have been obsessing about my lemons. But this Lemon tree has brought so much quiet happiness to me I can not seem to stop. So please, put up with a bit more. It took us a while after we harvested our lemon crop – 15 huge lemons, to figure out how to take terumah and maaser correctly. These are spesial mitzvah that only applies to the fruit and vegetables grown in Eretz Isroel. Finally DH was able to catch an expert Rabbi (the expert Rabbis are very, very busy people, especially before Pesach) this morning and get his lesson. So after he got home we were finally able to do the right thing, separate the terumah – a little piece of lemon on the tray. This part was supposed to go to the Kohen – priest, when the Temple was standing. Now it gets double wrapped up carefully (out of respect) and thrown out. Maaser is a 10Th part and supposed to be given to the Levites. We will deliver the two lemons from the tray to a wonderful Levitick family that has been very hospitable to us. As soon as we separated the terumah and maaser we had our tea – with lemon and put some lemon juice in the huge salad, that has become our main part of dinner.
