“The Winter past, the Spring is here,
Our thanks for this to Party dear.”
from a song that dates to my Mom’s childhood.
Today is one of my Mom’s birthdays. Yes she has two. Why? It is a very Russian story. My Mother was born on March 5Th in 1947. Sorry, for giving it away Mom, you are 16 anyway. Then there was nothing very special about this date. Six years later, in 1953, Stalin died on March 5Th. My Grandfather was very perturbed. Who could ever celebrate this sad, sad date?! How could a daughter of his have a birthday that would co-inside with the anniversary death of “Father of all nations” (one of the Stalin’s titles)? He decided that the date will have to be changed. So off he went to the Buro of Vital Statistics. I have to note here, that it was practically impossible to change anything on the Birth Certificate in Russia once it was made out and officially stamped. Even a single letter, much less a date of birth. But he was a man with a mission. And a bottle of Vodka. We still do not have exact details as to how the whole thing was done. But the end result was that My Mother’s date of birth was changed from March 5Th to March 8Th.
Years past. Politics changed. Now the story seems funny. But I still remember the times, when before using newspaper “for the toilet needs”, (the real toilet tissue was not easily obtainable), my Grandfather carefully cut out photos of the current political leaders. After all, one could hardly wipe himself with their faces. Grandpa was not patriotic. Just prudent. The old outhouse was shared by four families and your neighbours saw who one was wiping himself with. Quite a few people, have ended up in Siberia for neglecting to cut up the newspaper.
So we celebrate my Mom’s birthday twice – just three days apart.
This year she wanted me to make her a lacy Summer hat. I dug through my pattern samples and came up with a stitch my Grandma showed to me this past Summer. Mom loves pink, she is a blond, she also has a lot of nice curly hair.
So here is a hat, that will not smoosh it down.
I will mail it to her on Monday, her second Birthday.
P.S. The pattern for this hat is now available in my Chicken Stitches Etsy Shop.
