I love playing with beads. I started making my own Stitch Markers because I could not find the ones that would work for me.
I tried it all – the rubber loops, safety pins, plastic rings with tails and without. And of course the fancy, handmade types too. I remember buying four very pretty markers at the Maryland “Sheep & Wool” festival one year. The beads were beautiful, I loved them and wanted to use them all the time. But I did not. Because there were two huge problems. The carelessly wound wire caught and split yarn and the markers had a tendency to fall apart. All the time… Next year I brought them back to vendor and asked her to fix them. Only to be told that I was “probably knitting wrong”…
I remember complaining to my learning-crafting group about it. And then one of my friends asked me why don’t I try making my own…
Making my own markers? But.. But… But why not?..
It took a while to get a hang of how to twist and bend wires. Even more time was spent on research and testing. What wires worked better, what beads, what rings. Trying to find the beads and charms for my markers. Designing markers and stitch counters. All this took a long time, a lot of work and I had lots of fun doing it!
And absolutely unexpectedly a hobby turned into a serious business venture. And that was when my Chicken Stitches Etsy Shop was born.
Well, that was past. The present is different. I remember when one of my friends told me that she gave up making jewelry. She has MS. She told me that working with wire and tools took too much concentration, too much tension and it hurt too much. And she felt that her work was not up to her exacting standard anymore… This happened about six years ago, I did not really understand her than. Now I do.
Arthritis is slowly but steadily progressing. And my hands seem to be affected most.
It took a huge effort to make my peace with it.
And now I see that my marker-making days are almost over. I can still work, but I know this is not going to last long. And so it is time to gracefully quit. Wile I can still do good work, while I can still make the markers I would be happy to use.
So I have decided that this will be my last Holiday Season.
