Blankets, blankets… Everyone loves a good warm blanket!
Finally I took an acceptable photo of the Winter blanket knit for DS 4.
It is all done, even the ends woven in, and waiting to be used when it will get cold. Since now it is the end of June and the weather just warming up for the scorchers (we have not used our AC yet) it is kind of hard to believe that at some point the cold weather will return. Of course all is relative and the temperature here rarely drops below 55F. But we have now been long enough in Israel to believe that 55F is very, very cold.
Actually for the past four months our building has undergone major renovations. The top layer of the walls was scraped off, thick insulation pads were installed, then heat-saving panels on top of insulation. We got new windows installed on our front wall. That is a bit ironic, since the front faces a cemetery, while the back faces the street most people use. Well there is no reasoning with a money saving bureaucrat, so… Our balconies with slate tiles were declared toxic and unsafe, so they were removed. New balconies are coming at some point. And lots more interesting noisy and messy things. All this remodeling is happening with us living in the apartments. Thankfully the workers usually stop at two o’clock, so at least half of the day is kind of peaceful. But all this supposed to make our apartment cooler in the Summer and warmer in the Winter. I think it is working! Our street has only three buildings, all built about 60 years ago. Very, very old for Israel, they were definitely due for the update.
Anyway, back to the blankets!
I was in a hurry to finish the winter blanket because I wanted to start a Summer one using locally available cotton yarn I discovered. This blanket have not been started yet, mainly because of the major dilemma – to knit or to crochet? That is my question. I got the yarn for both and probably will attempt to do both, and they will probably be done just in time for Winter. This or the next one…
If I will knit my blue and orange blanket I think I want to do it from corner to corner, alternating rows of garter stitch, cables and very simple lace. I need to sit down with a notebook and pen and plan it. Then (gasp!) make a swatch.
If I go with crochet, I am all set to try “Sophie’s Universe”. The pattern is pretty elaborate and very interesting. There are even video tutorials. I am very grateful to my friends from Knit Talk Yahoo Group for drawing my attention to it.
Meanwhile, while I have not made my decision yet, I already bought the yarn for the second blanket too.
P.S. I keep wondering, why did I get this blanket addiction all of a sudden? Can it be that in these very troubled times of no safety all I can do to calm myself is to wrap my children in something I made for them and pray that my love will prevail?..
P.P.S. Where there ever “safe, untroubled times”? A tired, sleepy Mom wants to know…
